What Is Bankroll Management?

Bankroll management is the practice of deciding in advance how much money you are willing to risk, and structuring your bets to make that budget last an appropriate amount of time. It doesn't change your odds of winning — no strategy can do that in a game of pure chance — but it does help you control losses and make more deliberate decisions.

Set a Hard Session Budget

Before you open any game, decide the maximum amount you are willing to lose in that session. This figure should be money you can genuinely afford to lose without financial impact. Once you have set this number:

  • Treat it as spent before you begin.
  • Do not top it up if you reach the limit.
  • Do not include winnings from earlier in the session as "extra" — winnings are real money too.

The Bet Size Rule of Thumb

A commonly suggested guideline is to keep your bet size at no more than 1–2% of your session bankroll per spin. This gives you enough spins to experience the game's natural variance without exhausting your budget too quickly.

Session BudgetSuggested Bet Size (1%)Approximate Spins
£20£0.20~100
£50£0.50~100
£100£1.00~100

This is a rough guide, not a formula. High-volatility slots in particular can deplete a budget much faster than the spin count suggests, as long losing streaks are normal.

Understanding Volatility's Role

Volatility (also called variance) determines how a slot distributes its wins:

  • Low volatility: Smaller, more frequent wins. Budget lasts longer per spin count.
  • High volatility: Larger but rarer wins. Budget can disappear quickly during dry spells.

If you have a modest budget, low-to-medium volatility slots are generally more suitable. High-volatility games like Gates of Olympus or Dog House are designed for players who can sustain a longer loss run before hitting significant wins.

Win Limits: Locking In Profits

Just as important as a loss limit is a win limit — a point at which you stop playing if you're ahead. This is a personal decision, but a common approach is to stop at 1.5–2× your starting budget. Without a win limit, many players simply play until their balance returns to zero.

Avoid the Most Costly Mistakes

  1. Chasing losses: Increasing your bet size after a losing streak to "win it back" is one of the most dangerous patterns in gambling and can accelerate losses rapidly.
  2. Betting max without context: Maximum bets make sense on some progressive jackpot games where they are required to qualify — but on standard video slots, they only increase the speed at which you can lose your budget.
  3. Playing with money earmarked for other purposes: Gambling funds should always be discretionary.

Use Platform Tools

Most regulated online casinos offer built-in tools to support responsible bankroll management:

  • Deposit limits — caps on how much you can fund your account per day/week/month
  • Loss limits — automatic stops when you reach a set loss threshold
  • Session time limits — prompts or enforced breaks after a set time
  • Reality checks — periodic notifications showing your session activity

Setting these limits before you start playing — not during — is when they are most effective. Emotions during a session can override good intentions.
